The Democratic Dilemma!

“If we look at humanity with a calm and disinterested eye, it seems  at first , to show us only the violence of the powerful and the oppression of the weak. With this, the mind is shocked at the cruelty of the one, and the blindness of the other”  Jean Jacques Rousseau-The spirit of laws.

Deep down the heart, humanity harbours  chaotic tendancies which are often produced by mere accident rather than by wisdom; and which appears disguised as; ‘us verses them’ , ‘weakness or  power’, ‘riches and poverty’. These distinctions and prejudices have evolved over with every step of Mankind’s progress. Since antiquity, the perpetual struggle and scramble for power has characterized most human endeavors, even impelling them to conflict lethaly against each other. Among Men and societies ,power has been sought, and achieved through chaotic warfares, conquests and dominions, and maintained at whatever cost, chaotic if it must. This madness for, and of Power has immensily corrupted Mankind, leaving them to exist in both mental and social chaos ,though purposely created to coexist in ordered design. Throughout history, these social strives have been sustained by power issue; be it of religious, moral, political or economic nature. For instance, Both the first and second world wars were elementary based on Power play. This self-centered antagonism, that springs from the premodial, human survival instinct, has crept all along, lingered on, and has now evolved into a real dark social monster; manifesting itself in a striking modern disparity between the’ us verses them’ , ‘haves verses havenots’ , ‘rulers verses the ruled’ ‘the powerful few verses the inferior multitudes’. In such a brutish, competetive ‘winner take all’ and ‘do or die’ jungle wake, the minority who have managed to marshal social privileges, power and authority, have practically alienated themselves from the rest; prompting to the solidification of social classism, and stiff pyramids of influence within ruling bureacracies. So sad that this social virus has gradually destroyed the natural homeostasis, inherent in the very core of humanity.

Faced With the difficult task of seeking order in the inherently chaotic society, humanity has attempted to find a remedy to this social impasse ,in a bid to restore back the natural social balance. So far, among all the political philosophies that mankind has fashioned to counter these social chaos, democracy seems to be the most plausible. This is because it is the only system that acknowledges the separate, yet equal stations endowed to all individuals by nature. More so ,democratic governance allows for equal participation ,representation and accountability. This acknowledgement sounds optimistic; however, democracy being the best alternative capable of securing equitable representation does not guarantee easy practical applicability in the society. At such a contradicting juncture, we are awakened to one great defining paradox of humanity- “Failure of democracy to achieve social Order, in a naturally increasing Ordered existence”. Needless to say, the social order envisioned by Democracy is mere subject to two factors; First, the willingness of the ruling class to allow for equal social participation and inclusion, and secondly, a civically informed  and active citizenry.

To familiarise with the foundation of these modern day social chaos, the moral and political investigation is useful; while a comprehensive history of governments is equally insightful. Going back in time, we catch a sketchy glimpse of the period when the numbers in the society began to get larger, and dynamics more complex; arising the necessity to institute structures of governance-to administer justice and dispense services to the general public. With time, as these establishments crystallized, they eventually gave forth to rigid structures of influence, wealth and authority .unfortunately, this state of affairs has to date concentrated a few individuals at the top of the social pyramid, leaving the rest squeezing and suffocating for freedom at the social rock bottom . More so, this has also skewed political voice and representation severely towards those that have power and authority; This can be seen in the modern social elite class, which possess an out sized influence over policy and decision-making. Even worse, this elitist bunch continue to determine representation and access to opportunities for individual and collective development. Over time, the resultant multifaceted marginalizations have precipitated to a bagful of modern day socio-economic disenfranchisements, across all social spectrum.

Most oftenly than not, the individual is not given the freedom to participate in the Democratic process of inclusion. Among the reasons why societies fail in adopting and institutionalizing democracy, is that the tyrannical ruling governments are ever clamping down on the freedom of the people to know and actively engage in the democratic process of inclusion. This is because the elite class is always ready to protect power at all costs; even if it means opposing and suppressing the wills of the public, of whom governance is supposed to serve. Unfortunately, this continued dominance by the few has only served to cement the already toxic status quo. No case exemplifies this propensity more than the 2021 Presidential elections in Uganda; Where the ruling government did the custom; It imposed itself on the people, despite pretentiously conducting heavily funded Presidential elections, in the guise of upholding Democratic freedom.

Apart from the freedom to engage in the Democratic process, inclusive and equal participation requires informed and self aware individuals. This is another barrier against the attainment of social order. Just like a surveyor inspects the ground to establish and ascertain whether it is suitable for erecting a building or not, proponents of democracy ought to be aware of the literacy conditions of the populace among which democracy is to be instituted. Now, Since most governments are mandated with dispensing education services, most have deliberately chosen to offer selected academic elements that only fit the national, industrial and commercial needs. In turn, this has denied the populace the liberty to engage in self-determination. This has gradually turned them to automatons unable to actively participate in the democratic process -simply because they are less enlightened to know what is naturally right for themselves. Ever wondered how even some of the so called ‘Democratic nations’ of the world like the United States, end up electing tyrannical leaders that later on subvert the voices of the majority ?regardless of their relatively high educational levels? In Africa, the situation is extremely worse. This is because democratic participation through voting is characterized by mere party identity, and tribal bias. This sour reality of civic ignorance paralyses any step aimed at attaining social harmony and equity.

With this in mind, the implication that Democratic existence and order is threatened from both ends is almost undeniable . At the top of the pyramid, the excessive self-centeredness and greed to maintain authority and power leads them to cut off any effort aimed at achieving democratic governance for social order, for fear of loosing authority and dominance. At the bottom of the pyramid, the passive ignorance hinders them from knowing their rights as entitled by the law and order of nature. In such a wake whereby  democracy  is ideally the best system of governance yet practically unattainable, humanity continues to be confronted by a looming dilemma.
