Mwai Kibaki, who was running for presidency at the time on behalf of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), was engaged in a gruesome traffic accident on December 3 that left the country in shock.
The tragedy occurred on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway close to the Machakos junction as the nation was gearing up to vote out President Daniel Moi, who had reigned for 24 years, and during a time of tense campaigning.
Rescue operations were initiated and managed by former Kitui senator David Musila when Kibaki’s car lost control and landed in a ditch.
Despite suffering severe wounds, Kibaki was still awake and urged the former senator to summon his son David and his personal physician, Dr. Dan Gikonyo.
In a previous interview, Dr. Gikonyo indicated that Kibaki required specialized care outside of the country and that they were under intense pressure from the media and the country to explain what had transpired.
Later, it was decided to fly Kibaki from London to Nairobi.
Following the traffic incident, Kibaki supporter Raila Odinga apparently did not trust the ambulance driver who arrived on the scene and took control of the vehicle himself.
In a previous interview, political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi stated that Raila was the one who drove the ambulance from Machakos to the hospital in Nairobi.
